盛茂烨,生卒年不详。明代画家。号念庵、一作研庵,长洲(今江苏苏州)人,善山水,有烟林清旷之概。人物亦精工典雅。《图绘宝鉴续篡》说他“擅山水,树木槎丫,山头高耸,虽无宋元遗意,较后吴下之派,又过善矣”。万历三十五年(1607)作阁影松声扇,崇祯十年(1637)作秋高古树图,南京博物馆藏有其所画山水册。
盛茂烨是明末苏州画家,画承吴门派馀绪,大概以师法谢时臣为多。好作长林叠嶂巍峨险峻之景。此图写寒山策蹇,峰高雪厚,林深路滑,很有北宋人雄沉景象。画雪景烘染太过失之緽,烘染太少失之薄,此图皴染得当,既不失雄厚,又满幅雪意,自是佳作。

该图绘于明崇祯十三年(1639年),属画家晚年之作。仙山楼阁即仙人所居之地,是中国古代文人虚构的理想世界。宋元以来,以此为题材的绘画作品形式多种多样。盛茂烨笔下的这幅《仙山楼阁图》轴并没有具体刻画传说中的仙境,而是通过对苍松、茅舍、山泉和人物的刻画寓意中国古代文人隐士的生活情趣和高尚追求,体现了画家的内心向往和审美情趣。笔法苍劲有力,人物刻画生动逼真,线条清晰,风格独特。

此图描绘冬至后的萧瑟山居林园中,梅花正要开放,春天即将来临的景象。近景柳林枝冠繁密如烟;中景梅干含颖而发;远景山谷中云霭飘浮,弥向远方。自题“岸客待腊将舒柳,山意冲寒欲放梅”,诗情画意,跃然纸上。全图既得烟林清旷之概,又溢春之将至之气。
