       七十七岁尚健在。关于其生年，《宋元明清书画家年表）根据故宫博物院藏《岁朝图》轴上关于“辛丑元旦画于竹深处，九十二翁袁尚统”之题款推定，其应生于1570年，故《中国美术家人名辞典》《中国绘画史图录》《中国美术辞典》《中国美术全集》均采用此说。然《岁朝图》现经考证为伪作，故此说不确。据杨新《袁尚统生年辨析》一文考证，上海博物馆所藏《枯水寒鸦图》为其真迹，以画上款署“辛丑”、“时年七十二”等句推断，袁尚统应生于明万历十八年（公元1590年）。

       此轴描绘在狭窄的水道门口群舟争渡的热闹场面。晨雾迷濛的苏州阊门，一位显贵的官船正欲出城，与忙于进城的四乡小贩的群舟争道，官宦站立船头，颐指气使，正喝令群民让路，但急于进城谋生的众商贩针锋相对，并不相让，狭窄的水门一时拥堵不堪，而远处仍有小舟向阊门驶近。官船大而势孤，群艇小而势众。
       本幅自题：“晓关舟挤。丙戌秋日夏于竹深处。袁尚统。”下钤“尚统私印”、“袁氏叔明”印2方。
