生于湖北武昌。1981年于湖北省工艺美术公司从事工艺美术设计。1984年考入浙江美术学院（现中国美术学院）中国画系花鸟专业。1988年毕业获学士学位。毕业后留校任教。现为中国美术学院中国画系花鸟专业教研室主任、博士、教授、浙派中国书画研究院研究员。
