谢之光（1900--1976），初名廷川，署东山后裔，后易名之光，室名栩栩，浙江馀姚人。上海美术专科学校毕业。曾任南洋烟草广告公司美术员，九福公司美术主任，上海中国画院画师。中国美术家协会会员和上海分会理事、上海画院画师、上海市文联（二届）委员会委员、民主同盟盟员。早年擅月份牌年画。作品有《铁水奔流》、《洛神》等。
谢之光1899年2月25日出生于浙江余姚，家境贫寒。后居上海，14岁时师从周慕桥学习国画、油画，继后又师从于张聿光、刘海粟。擅长人物、鸟兽、花卉等，尤擅仕女画，笔法采中西之长，别具一格。从上海美术专科学校毕业后，以舞台美术、商业美术设计为业，曾在上海福州路的天禅大舞台画背景，后来画月份牌、香烟广告，不久即成为闻名上海的广告画家。1922年，他年方23岁，便出版了第一张月份牌《西湖游船》。构思与技法非同凡响，取得成功。以后几幅作品引起工商美术界的注意。南洋兄弟烟草公司捷足先登，把他请入公司的广告美术部门。华成烟草公司为与其他烟草公司竞争，急需美术人才，也看准了这位新秀，出高薪请他担任公司广告部主任。当时谢之光一张广告画价值500大洋，他的兄弟姐妹全靠他供养。他开设画室，招收学生，学生一次性交学费500大洋，拜师时还要办酒席。
谢之光晚年患肺癌，在生病期间，刘海粟等画家都去看望。临去世前一个月他仍在作画，画得特别多，人们排队索取，子女们劝他，他说，我没病，一定要画，实际他已经知道病情了。1976年9月12日晨，谢之光逝世。由于毛泽东主席刚去世才三天，尸体要过一个星期才能火化。1976年10月4日，芳慧珍去世。谢之光的后半生全身心创作国画，成为上海著名国画家之一。他青年时代在月份牌广告上的成就是上海广告美术史上相当精彩的一页。
谢之光有一子一女，夫人叫潘锦云，娘家是开银楼的，人很开放，喜好跳舞、赌钱。在旧上海，许多商业谈判在“堂子”(妓院)里进行，一个当时与玉堂春齐名的妓女叫芳慧珍，谢之光后期的作品大部分是她当的模特。据谢之光女儿谢碧月介绍：后来谢夫人发现了谢之光与芳慧珍的关系，但她未与谢之光争吵，只理智地提出离婚，1930年的除夕之夜，谢之光下跪祈求：“还有两个孩子怎么办，别离婚”但潘锦云心意已绝，离家去了澳门，后嫁给了澳门一家糖厂的老板。1930年谢之光和芳慧珍正式结婚，婚后芳慧珍仍和年轻时一样很少出门，而且她对谢之光的两个孩子很好。据谢碧月讲，她与继母很亲近。
谢之光晚年非常不幸，23岁刚大学毕业的儿子患了“血吸虫”病不治身亡，面对儿子的死亡，谢之光异常地坦然，甚至没有落泪，他说：“别怕，每个人都要去世的，我也会来陪你。”潘锦云每次回上海都会询问谢之光的身体状况，她与谢之光的妹妹相处得很好，每回上海都住在她家，得知儿子去世的消息潘锦云悲痛万分，重男轻女的她此后很少回上海，谢碧月只在30岁时见过生母一面。谢之光在解放前有吸大烟癖好，解放后他以坚强的毅力戒掉了大烟。
作画要有新意，发掘新题材是常取的途径。谢之光感觉上海滩上不少人喜欢搓麻将，于是灵机一动，画了《洪武豪赌图》，把朱元璋、沈万三等人在豪赌时的表情、性格及气氛表现得淋漓尽致。该画印成于1935年，它的巨大发行量引出了不少跟风者与仿效者。即使是老题材，谢之光也能画得与众不同。《村童闹学》是他这一时期的代表作品。40年代，上海一些画片社见月份牌发行量剧减，便开辟了画片市场，这些作品为商品的画片，上面不画商品，也不标明商业单位名称。它们像月份牌那样受到市民的欢迎。谢之光的仕女画便成了这些画片社的重头戏，且销路很好。1947、1948年，他还创作了大批报纸广告，特别是红金香烟系列报纸广告。1949年后谢之光任中国画院画师。在作画上他从有法到无法，狂放不羁。他以纸团、竹筷、调羹当画具，随意泼洒，略加点划成画，所画天趣盎然，为人所宝。人们向他求画，他随画随送不取报酬，故自号“白弄山人”，以为自嘲。没有钱了，他就画年画，有钱了就画国画。谢之光老年时候，是在生活中不会花钱的，文化大革命时期很穷，73岁时他从橱窗里面看见蛋糕，很想吃，却没有钱，年轻时每月曾赚几千大洋的他却连8毛钱的蛋糕买不起，为了生存，他甚至每幅画只取20元钱。?
