丁宁原，山东益都（现青州市）人。擅国画。1957年考入山东师范学院艺术系美术专业，1958年转入山东艺专美术系，1962年毕业。1963-1966年借调山东省文联美术创作组。1977年参与山东师范大学艺术系的恢复筹建工作。历任山东师范大学艺术系副主任，美术系主任，教授。1993年主持创建山东省第一个美术学硕士授权点，任首批硕士生导师。
曾任山东美术家协会副主席、山东省美术教学研究专业委员会主任委员，山东美术教学研究专业委员会理事长、山东省高校书画协会副主席、山东画院高级画师。现为中国美术家协会会员、山东美术家协会顾问、山东师范大学美术系主任、教授、硕士生导师。
早期以人物画创作为主，上世纪80年代后主攻山水画。生活底蕴丰厚，作品生活气息浓郁。
1960年《黄河写生》入选三届全国美展；
1964年创作的《假日》、《出工》入选第四届全国美展，使他在美术界崭露头角；1964年《重见光明》入选山东作品晋京展。
1966年，丁宁原创作的工笔组画《重见光明》在中国美术馆展出后，《人民日报》曾以整版予以刊赘，引起各界的关注。
1977年《心血相连》入选全国建军美展；
80年代后期，丁宁原专心致力于山水画的创作和研究，他所选择的是一条艰辛的创新之路。要在传统的基础上前进一步，在前人的基础上力争有所突破，绝非易事。山水画题材上的创新开拓，对时代情怀的追求，需要创造与之相适应的技法与形式，丁宁原进行了不懈的努力。
1984年《渔岛春汛》《鲁班的传说》入选六届全国美展；
1994年《一夜春雨》入选八届全国美展；
1995年、1997年两度应邀赴俄罗斯讲学并举办画展；
1997年赴香港举办画展；
1999年、2005年赴美国举办画展；
2000年赴日本举办画展。
出版有《丁宁原速写作品》、《山水写生画稿》、《丁宁原风景速写》、《丁宁原俄罗斯写生》、《当代中国画精品集——丁宁原》、《速写指南》、《速写应试》、《中国画一山水》(教育部组编教材)等。
