李万增是中国著名国画家，贵州省剑河县人，男，侗族，1932年生于黔东南州剑河县南明镇永兴村。1945年就读于剑河中学。1948年考入省立镇远高师。
1955年10月毕业到剑河县轻工局作财务工作。1965年入贵州省干训班培训。1983年后任剑河县文化馆馆长。1987年加入中国共产党。1993年元月退休。主要作品《请来侗家吃油茶》、《银春》、《侗家迎新娘》、《太平鼓》等70多件版画。
这个出生在边远山乡的侗族农民的儿子，孩提之年便爱上绘画，恋上了艺术。有缘承受毕业于北平艺专的袁行恕先生（台湾作家琼瑶之母）的画业启蒙，受画家蒋跛公、史泮虹先生的教诲，其版画得益于古元、王琦先生的艺术熏陶，他没有进过专业艺术院校的门，但以智慧和勤奋、悟性与坚韧拼争50年，一步步攀登艺术阶梯。他几十年来的辛苦拼搏已引起了社会的瞩目。
1995年5月，中国民委、文化部为他举办《民族风情版画展》，李万增先生把《高原雄风》、《苗山情》等70件民族风情版画堂堂正正地展进了全国最高艺术殿堂――中国美术馆。引起北京艺术前辈的重视，古元先生赠词“情融乡土，意满民间”，王琦先生赠词“刀下民族情，版上抒情诗”，受到原中顾委周林同志和贵州省委黄瑶同志的高度赞赏。然而，他并不因之满足，而是充满期待：“如果有一天能把凝聚民族魂的作品引向世界讴歌中华，我就如愿以偿了。”
李万增先生在青年成长时期，做梦都想升入专业艺术院校深造。“文革”期间，几次机遇都因人为的缘故失去了。他绝望之下，下定决心走刻苦自修之路，坚信奋斗是任何势力也阻挡不了的。他常道：“民族山乡是我求知的学校，民族文化是我艺术成长的养料。”他总是信心十足：“艺术就是我的生命。我要为艺术而生，为艺术而死，将艺术还给人民，别无选择。”他就是这样钟爱艺术，寻找“母亲”风风雨雨，悲怆凄凉，前边是荆棘，后边是狼烟，他循着艺术艰难爬行，找寻着自己的心灵归宿。
李万增先生艺术生涯起步于五十年代。离开省立镇远高师参加工作后，不断发挥他绘画艺术的专长，创作的绘画作品省展和国展，“文革”前就有几十件作品问世，小有名气，二十几岁成为贵州美术家协会早期会员。青年铸志却不幸在“文革”十年中劫难，他在被遣送迫害的恐怖中始终没有放下艺术追求，戴着“封资修反党分子”的大帽坚持作画，搜集文字素材，作死不悔改的“文化囚徒”。
1976年，随着文化大革命的结束，文艺春天来临。已被折磨得遍体鳞伤的他重振情志，继续拿起创作之笔和木刻刀，进行冷静自省苦心探索。他广泛研究民族文化和版画艺术，学习古元、李桦、王琦等老前辈新兴版画艺术精髓，汲收民族文化营养，为他日后创作注入耐人寻味的内在神韵。
在探求中，他决心鼓风扬帆、勇敢开拓，寻找超越自己的创造意识。1981年后，李万增先生有缘六次参加贵州省艺术馆、省美术家协会、省文联的专业培训，使他的艺术创作取得突破性的发展并日趋成熟。
艺术追求没有捷径可走，自古以来不知有多少自学者苦无门路抱恨而终，自修者所付出的代价与科班艺术家相比不知要大多少倍。李万增先生当时既是文化馆长，亦是业务骨干，还有社会兼职，写文作画全在业余时间。几十年里，不知什么是节假日，什么是安闲，每天工作不下十几小时。年近古稀却愈加发奋，凌晨四点他的卧室便亮起电灯，桌案响起他伏案着书沙沙动笔声。沉醉于艺术的他，无心梳理人情事故，无心关照儿女学习和就业生存。他不抽烟，不嗜酒，每餐一碗白饭下肚，清淡打发生活，忘我地把时光用于事业追求。严重的肠胃病稍愈，因眼病五次手术又残酷地折磨他，写书作画之时难于忍受，他用左手撑着病情严重的左眼皮艰难地坚持，熬得他满脸皱纹好象刀刻过似的。
李万增先生热衷艺术，关心国家，尊爱民族。为群众文化工作苦心耕耘作奉献，培养农民作画，把一批大山里的农民、青少年、儿童培养成为画乡人才、蜚声海外。他工作的剑河县被文化部命名为“全国民间画乡。”
