苏小定出生在拥有深厚漆艺文化底蕴的阳江，她的父亲是一位水墨画画家，先生和姐姐也是画水墨画的，本来，她可以选择比较轻松的水墨画创作，但执着于漆画的她，就是忘不了根植在童年时期的那些关于漆的记忆。
 小定的漆艺之道是受她的启蒙恩师云南艺术学院教授许章衡先生的影响，这位老师对阳江早期的漆艺非常了解。有一次，在老师的带领下，苏小定与画友们一起参观了阳江漆器厂，繁复的漆艺程序、精美的漆器产品让人大开眼界。幸运的是，她遇到了当时正带着学生在阳江漆器厂实习的广州美院教授蔡克振老师，才知道原来漆艺也可以成为一种艺术画种——漆画。从此，她便对漆产生了感情。
 后来，在报考广州美院时，因为当年广州美院没有开设装饰绘画专业，于是，苏小定便选择了设计方向。人生际遇、辗转前行，苏小定已从事高校教学工作19余年，在进行设计艺术教学的同时，她更不忘继续专研漆画技艺，并逐渐产生了把设计理念与漆画创作相结合的艺术观点。
 苏小定正式进入漆画行业是在2003年，期间曾三次入选由中国美术家协会主办的全国大型漆画展，二十多次入选广东省各类美术大型展览并多次获奖。蔡克振评价：“小定的漆画风格，着眼于意象和哲理的互相渗透，表现细腻精致，同时具有油画的斑斓与厚重、国画的通灵与精美、水彩的通透与淋漓、以及雕塑的立体与版画的肌理…。在表现手法上，充分地体现了她的聪明和睿智。”
