蔡志忠（1948年2月2日～）出生于台湾彰化县花坛乡。15岁中途辍学后只身到台北，开始连环漫画创作；1971年出任光启社电视美术指导；1977年，白手起家，创立远东卡通公司；1981年，另创龙卡通公司；此间，拍摄了《七彩卡通老夫子》，《乌龙院》等卡通电影，《老夫子》曾获金马奖最佳卡通电影长片奖；1983年，开始在各报刊发表四格漫画作品，并在新加坡、马来西亚、香港、日本的报章长期连载；1984年，自组个人漫画工作室作品；1985年，获选为台湾十大杰出青年；1999年，获荷兰克劳斯王子基金会奖。尔后，蔡志忠致力于研读中国古籍和佛书，创作出脍炙人口的《庄子说》、《老子说》等经典漫画，被翻译成二十几种文字，在不同的国度扮演着相同的功能──藉由浅显易懂的解释、温润圆滑的线条，让读者分享他对生命演绎出的哲学，日本“旺文社1994年版”高中课本，还以《庄子说》之七页作品作为基本教材。第一本《庄子说》曾连续十个月成为金石堂畅销书第一名。1985年获选为台湾十大杰出青年。1999年-2008年，蔡志忠闭关9年，研究物理学的“时间”问题，2008年年初接受某报专访时，自称研究出“时间方程式”，但未公开具体细节。
创作年表
蔡志忠先生从十五岁起便开始成为职业漫画家。他用简洁生动的线条描绘了一部部颇具影响的漫画书，在台湾、香港、新加坡、日本、马来西亚等地广受欢迎。他的作品庄子说、老子说、禅说、史记、西游记、聊斋系列等开启了中国古籍经典漫画的先河。并以其对诸子百家，古典名著，唐诗宋词，佛经禅语的独到心得，行云流水般的画笔，将经典白话化与漫画化，并加以现代诠释，让现代人在完全没有负担的情境下，吸收智慧，轻松学习经典。在漫画与蔡志忠先生对话，倾听漫画家画笔之中的心灵世界，能让我们对他用线条演绎的哲理和幽默有更加深刻的体会。
十七岁开始画连环漫画；一九七一年任台湾光启社电视美术指导；七七年成立「远东卡通公司」和「龙卡通公司」，制作了《山T老夫子》和《卡通少林寺》两部电影。
八三年开始在报章杂志发表四格漫画，作品并在新加坡、台湾、马来西亚、日本和香港报章作长期连载，成绩可观。
八五年，被选为「台湾十大杰出青年」，深受传播界和教育界人士的推崇。其漫画由博益结集，取名《龙门四宝》，后易名《龙门阵》。
八六年，《漫画庄子》面世。这项崭新尝试将他的漫画事业推向另一个高峰。随后推出的《漫画老子》、《漫画列子》、《漫画孔子》、《漫画世说新语》、《漫画菜根谭》、《漫画聊斋》、《漫画史记》和《漫画水浒传》亦广受读者欢迎。《日本行脚》和《漫画动物园》则是蔡志忠两种不同风格的新尝试作品。
八九年，蔡志忠的作品继有《漫画禅说》、《漫画六祖坛经》、《漫画大学》、《漫画中庸》、《漫画唐诗》及《漫画少林寺》。
九○年，推出《漫画六朝怪谈》、《漫画西游记》、《漫画孟子》及《漫画三国志》。
九九年，首先推出《漫画论语》，接著还有《漫画孙子兵法》、漫画鬼狐仙怪系列及《漫画宋词》。
九二年，作品有《漫画老子(2)》及《漫画白蛇传》，以上各书均授权博益在香港出版。
九三年，博益出版了蔡志忠半生传奇--《漫话蔡志忠》，让读者更了解国际级漫画大师的生平轶事。同年出版《漫画后西游记》四册及《爱情10句话》。
九四年，推出作品包括《漫画封神榜》三册及《漫画后西游记》。
九五年，推出《漫画唐诗三百首》、《漫画韩非子》及《漫画六朝怪谈(2)》。
九六年，作品包括《漫画唐诗精选》及《漫画心经》。
九八年，推出《漫画佛陀说》和《漫画法句经》。
二○○○年，博益推出「蔡志忠漫画古典宝车千禧版」，重新编制蔡志忠的经典丛书。
二○○九年，与商务印书馆合作，出版最新作品《无耳空空学习日记》《猫科宣言》和《漫画儒家思想》《漫画佛学思想》《漫画道家思想》。
