Introduction in English

Van Gogh Museum was founded in 1973 in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

Its original design was planned by the architect Rilward (1888-1964) to collect the most precious 200 paintings of Van Gogh's golden age, about a quarter of all works, hundreds of sketches (thousands of others), and almost all of Van Gogh's letters, the most famous of which should be "Pigeons" and "Sunflower".

The museum also houses Japanese Ukiyo paintings and other works by Van Gogh and his brother Theo, such as Van Gogh portraits by Gauguin and Lotterick, and self-portraits of Gauguin and Bernard.

In July 1890, Van Gogh committed suicide.

In January 1891, six months after Van Gogh's death, his younger brother Theo died in grief at the age of 33. The doctor said, "Excessive tension and lament are the causes of death." Theo's wife, Joanna, inherited the mountains of oil paintings and sketches that Theo left her with. Van Gogh wrote hundreds of letters to Theo, as well as his youngest son, Vincent (V. W. van Gogh Vincent William Van Gogh, Van Gogh's nephew, and Van Gogh's namesake. Vincent represents Van Gogh's nephew below). Joanna was not familiar with Van Gogh, but when she read Van Gogh's letter, she was deeply touched and deeply attracted by Van Gogh's life and creation.

From then on, Joanna made the world know Van Gogh step by step through her hard and wise work. She often lent Van Gogh's works to exhibitions, and after collecting 652 letters into three volumes, she began to sort out the vast letters. Soon, these letters began to attract attention.

In 1914, Amsterdam published three volumes of Van Gogh Letters (both in German). Then there are several foreign language versions. Because of these letters, Van Gogh is known all over the world.

Joanna died in 1927. Although she worked hard, the paintings remained almost intact at home. At that time, Vincent, who had become a brilliant technician, inherited the paintings.

Around 1930, the art historian John Rudd met Vincent, who later described it as: "He has no shelf at all. He can't see a rich man at all. His habits and lifestyle are extremely simple, but his family is full of uncle's paintings and sketches. If all his works are stacked at home, I'm afraid I can't accommodate it. Most of these works have been exhibited for many years at the Municipal Museum of Modern Art in Amsterdam on long-term loan contracts.

After World War II, fearing that the paintings were scattered everywhere, he asked the governments of Amsterdam and the Netherlands for permanent collections on the condition of donating them.

In 1960, the Vincent van Gogh Foundation was founded.

In 1962, the city government of Amsterdam provided land and the State paid for it. The Van Gogh Museum of Art was finally about to become a reality.

In 1963, the Van Gogh Museum of Art opened. Vincent is also active in design. The building was designed by Gerrit Thomas Rietveld (1888-1964), a Dutch architect. He was succeeded by others after his death.

On June 2, 1973, the Van Gogh Museum of Art was officially opened, and Queen Juliana of the Netherlands came to cut ribbons. From then on, the Van Gogh Museum of Art became a place of interest in Amsterdam. Before his death, Vincent witnessed the completion of the gallery.

In 1978, a few days after his 88th birthday, Vincent died. His friend John Rudd wrote: "He lived in his house for forty years, and all Van Gogh's works were empty, but he was in a very relaxed and happy mood as he unloaded the burden that he had always carried on his shoulders."

The Van Gogh Museum of Art was built on a small area of 60,000 people a year. But in recent decades, Van Gogh has become more and more famous, with more than one million visitors a year, and the original venue has been stretched to the limit. Thus, the new Exhibition Wing of the Van Gogh Art Museum, designed by the world-famous architect Jizhao Kurokawa, was built on April 29, 1997 by the Japanese insurance company Anta Fire and Hainan (whose president, Ando Fujio, bought a sunflower from Van Gogh in 1987). At the same time, the old building has been rebuilt and designed by architect Martin Van Hood.

The new and old pavilions were reopened on June 24, 1999.

In September 2013, the Van Gogh Museum of Fine Arts announced the discovery of a new Van Gogh work, "Sunset of Montmarjol", which is the first discovery of Van Gogh's genuine works in 40 years since its establishment.
