笔名自如、艺海童婴。1955年3月出生于北京，擅长绘画、面塑、绢人、纸雕、玻璃装饰画、烫画、风筝、刻蛋、叶画等。1980年入中央工艺美术学院进修。历任北京美术人型厂绢人面塑设计、北京民间艺术公司民间工艺品设计、宋庆龄基金会和平出版社美编室编辑。
1946年从师于面塑老艺人曹仪策先生，1986年7月结业于中央工艺美院特艺系。多年来曾受华君武先生、李松涛先生、胡挈青女士(已故)、葛敬安女士(已故)、徐锋女士、潘洁兹先生(已故)、薄贯休先生、张淑敏女士、张祖英先生、张孝友先生、赵士英先生、王同辰先生、王志远先生、杨玉栋先生、雄启瑞先生、刘西古先生、刘荫恒先生等帮助与指点。
作品有面塑《十八罗汉》，单色面塑仿玉、仿象牙、仿铜等。
作品绢人《印度舞》、蛋人《冬宝》分别获全国工艺美术展览二等奖、三等奖。作品在《中国美术史论》、《中国美术》、《中国美术报》、《装饰》、《人民日报》、《中国日报》、《大公报》等报刊杂志上发表，并在中央电视台、北京电视台、美国旧金山电视台及广播电台、阿根廷国家电视台及其它国家电视台专题播放。曾受中国对外友协、中国对外展览公司邀请，做为艺术家对19个国家进行文化交流。并在墨西哥艺术学院、阿根廷艺术学院、美国戴维斯大学、斯坦福大学、旧金山众多所中文学校及亚洲博物馆、文化中心等进行面塑讲座、展览、教授等活动，被约翰肯尼迪大学聘为客座教师。
编绘出版《儿童娱乐大王》、《发型设计》、《儿童学捏塑》、《狗王国》、《民间手工艺制作丛书》等。
