号大觉堂主人，河南省舞阳县人。1964年毕业于北京中国画院研究生班。历任北京中国花鸟研究会副会长、齐白石艺术研究会会长、北京画院艺术委员会委员、创作室主任等职。现为北京画院专业画家，中国美术家协会会员，国家一级美术师。
王培东的画风厚重、奔放、泼辣，作品经常参与全国性大展，并在美、日、加、法、韩、新加坡、印度、前苏联以及东欧等国展出，作品多次获奖。1989年在中国美术馆举办个人画展。作品被国内外美术馆、博物馆收藏，并出版在多种大型画集之中。王培东兼事美术理论研究，发表有“写意画——中国画发展的高级阶段”、“现代写意随想”、“写意画的再超越”等多篇论文。个人传略被收入《中国当代美术家辞典》、《中国当代艺术界名人录》、《中国当代名人录》、以及美国传记研究所出版的《国际杰出领导人名录》、英国剑桥传记中心出版的《国际名人辞典》等辞书中。1999年获“99年中国百杰画家”荣誉称号。
