吴祖光(吴召石、吴韶)(1917—2003),当代中国影响最大、最著名、最具传奇色彩的文化老人之一,江苏常州人,著名学者、戏剧家、书法家、社会活动家。 主要代表作有话剧《凤凰城》、《正气歌》、《风雪夜归人》、《闯江湖》,评剧《花为媒》,京剧《三打陶三春》和导演的电影《梅兰芳的舞台艺术》、《程砚秋的舞台艺术》,并有《吴祖光选集》六卷本行世。
现代著名剧作家、导演。原籍江苏武进,吴祖光又名吴召石、吴韶,祖籍江苏武进,1917年4月21日出生于生于北京东城小草厂的一所大宅院里,家庭为吴祖光提供了一个文学的环境。其父吴瀛,曾参加创办故宫博物院,精于诗文书画、篆刻和古文物鉴赏,对吴祖光的文学生涯有深刻影响,同年吴祖光毕业于北京孔德学校。在中法大学文学系学习一年后,应聘任南京戏剧专科学校校长室秘书。1934年发表的小说《宫娥怨》,是其处女作。七七事变后,随剧校到湖南、四川担任语文和中国戏剧史的教学。1936年于中法大学文科肄业。1937年,吴祖光任南京国立戏剧专科学校校长室秘书,同年创作抗日话剧《凤凰城》,成为全国戏剧界与日本侵略者进行斗争的有力武器。随后几年间,他创作了《正气歌》、《风雪夜归人》、《林冲夜奔》、《牛郎织女》和《少年游》等剧作声震剧坛,以上作品均收入《吴祖光戏剧选》。1945年,他主编的《新民晚报》副刊率先发表了毛泽东的词作《沁园春·雪》。1946年,他在上海创办《新民晚报》“夜光杯”副刊和《清明》杂志,还创作《捉鬼传》和新剧《嫦娥奔月》,声讨国民党的反动统治,后受国民党反动派的迫害逃亡香港。1947年,他在香港编导了《国魂》、《莫负青春》、《山河泪》、《春风秋雨》和《风雪夜归人》等电影。新中国成立后,吴祖光陆续创作出反映纺纱女工的电影《红旗歌》和儿童剧《除四害》等作品。1954年后,吴祖光导演了电影《梅兰芳舞台艺术》、《洛神》、《荒山泪》,为梅兰芳、程砚秋两位京剧艺术大师留下了极其珍贵的资料。1963年,他与妻子新凤霞合作改编了评剧《花为媒》,成为了评剧舞台上的成功佳作。此外他还创作了《武则天》、《三打陶三春》、《闯江湖》、《新凤霞传奇》和《三关宴》等大量作品。
1937年─1948年吴祖光任南京国立戏剧专科学校讲师,重庆中央青年剧社、中华剧艺社编导,《新民晚报》副刊编辑,《清明》杂志主编,香港大中华影片公司编导,香港永华影业公司导演。1949年后吴祖光任中央电影局、北京电影制片厂导演,牡丹江文工团编导,中国戏曲学校、中国戏曲研究院、北京京剧院编剧,文化部艺术局专业创作员,中国文联委员、中国戏剧家协会常务理事、副主席,友谊出版公司名誉董事长。1957年曾被错划为右派,下放北大荒劳动。1960年回到北京,先后在中央戏曲学校实验京剧团和北京京剧团任编剧,写有《武则天》、《凤求凰》和《三打陶三春》等剧目。1979年调文化部艺术局从事专业创作。粉碎四人帮以后,写了京剧《红娘子》和话剧《闯江湖》,都颇受欢迎。他是第五届至八届全国政协委员。建国后吴祖光出版了戏剧集《风雪集》、散文集《艺术的花朵》,同时还执导了多部艺术影片,其中的《梅兰芳舞台艺术》、《洛神》、《荒山泪》等为后世留下了京剧艺术大师梅兰芳、程砚秋的珍贵资料。1960年回北京实验京剧团和中国戏曲研究院任编剧,创作了《三打陶三春》、《三关宴》等京剧剧本,所改写的评剧《花为媒》的电影剧本堪称传统戏翻新的典范之作。“文革”后,吴祖光创作了取材于妻子新凤霞生活经历的话剧《闯江湖》。2003年4月9日,因冠心病发作,在北京逝世,享年86岁。
在夫人新凤霞去世后不久,吴祖光由于心情郁闷和年迈,血管硬化引起脑血管栓塞,曾先后三次住院。但他依然保持着乐观的生活态度。平日,他经常站在自家的阳台上眺望,看车水马龙、人来人往,脸上流露出笑容……他还经常坐在轮椅上,由保姆陪着下楼去遛弯儿或去理发馆刮脸洗头,这是他认为最惬意的时光。吴祖光从小就与书结下了不解之缘。几年前,他虽然把他和新凤霞的藏书捐给了北京戏曲学校,可后来他收集的书又把家中的书柜装得满满的。
吴祖光还特别喜欢看足球比赛,几乎场场都看。其女儿吴霜笑着说:“爸爸年纪大了,看电视经常打瞌睡,可是看足球、拳击、京剧从来就没有出现过这种情况,尤其是看足球比赛,俨然一位20几岁的青年,嘴里不时地嘟囔着:‘犯规’……他虽然年迈体弱,大脑不像以前那样好使唤,可看起球来表情却很丰富。”吴祖光偏爱甜食,尤其爱吃汉堡包。为让老人笑口常开,吴霜还特意养了一对小宠物———Baby和PP。吴老最喜欢PP,每当他见到PP满屋跑淘气时,脸上总露出舒心的微笑,这两只可爱的小动物已成为他的“宠儿”。吴祖光时常摸摸它们,逗逗它们,诙谐地说自己家里现有“八口”——自己、女儿、女婿、外孙、两位保姆还有Baby与PP。
吴祖光生于一九一七年,彼时军阀混战,国家处于贫弱交加内外交困时期;及至成年,恰又逢上日寇侵华,民族危亡;待到新中国成立,吴祖光正处盛年,是创作的黄金时期,按理,作为少年即得大名,当时中国文坛屈指可数的优秀剧作家之一,本应该是写出更多能够揭示时代面貌的戏剧作品的时候。但很不幸,没过多久,整个国家就被推进到一种只准说梦话严禁说真话的状态,再后就是众所周知的十年浩劫。能够最终劫后遗存,进入晚年,是惟一的那么一点点苍凉的幸运;我平常一直认为,像吴祖光先生这辈人确实是生不逢时的。想来,和吴祖光一样有那些时代经历的人,有这种“生不逢时”的人生慨叹者,当不在少数。吴祖光的好友、书画家黄苗子,曾赠语吴祖光:“生不逢时,才气纵横。”这八个字,一方面自然评的是吴祖光,赞其之才,叹其之遇,另一方面又何尝不可以为黄苗子的自况呢。但吴祖光不同意他这位好友的赠语,自下断语曰:“生正逢时,死不介意。”吴祖光时常同友人表达这样一种观念。
