《桃花扇》是一部以南明王朝的兴亡为内容的历史悲剧，共40出。故事写明末归德书生侯方域来南京应江南乡试，落第不归，寓居莫愁湖畔，参加了反对阉党的复社，后经画家杨龙友的介绍，结识了秦淮名妓李香君，两人萌发爱情，订婚之日，方域题诗扇以赠香君，作为信物。
