Among the paintings in Wumen area of Ming Dynasty, there are many works which depict the house names and nicknames of celebrities or the landscapes of literati, manors and villas where officials live. This picture belongs to the latter one. According to the book "Rebuilding Nanxi Cao Tang" written by Wang Haodeng, the queen of the volume, this picture depicts the scenery after the renovation of Nanxi Cao Tang, Gu's manor of the Wangzu clan in the south of the Yangtze River.
The waterway in the picture is winding, with bamboo bushes, fishing boat bridges, grass halls and temples scattered miscellaneous. The architecture and natural scenery are integrated, and the nature is harmonious. Although there are farmland and medicine nurseries, there is no farmer's hard work, which shows the elegant and leisurely life of literati in the south of the Yangtze River. The manor in the picture is more elegant and delicate than other gardens in the south of the Yangtze River, and has a unique pastoral interest.
The composition of the whole painting is dense but not disorderly. The flat slopes are outlined and dyed with dry brushes. The crowns, branches and leaves are mostly painted with variational ink dots. Both dots and dyes are used, sometimes with double hooks, which are rich in the sense of hierarchy. The whole picture is vigorous and concise, with a soft and bright style, which represents the typical artistic style of Wen Boren in his later years.
