此图作于明隆庆三年(1569年),文氏68岁时。画面描写从胥口泛舟太湖所见的景色,构图采用了中国古代绘画“三远法”中的“平远法”。中国画家追求为山水传神并直抒胸臆,即使以实际的山川为题时,也不拘泥于视觉上的机械描写。此幅画中“平远”的构图真实自然,着重表现辽阔的水面,与文氏常用的重叠塞实的布局有所不同,突显了太湖的浩渺。此种构图方式极好地突出了主题,展现出清旷幽远的意境。设色淡雅,为文派绘画的典型风貌。在笔墨表现方面,画家以文徵明的细笔画为基底,上追王蒙,山石用干笔勾勒、皴染,细劲缜密,有很强的个人风格特征,属文伯仁上乘之作。

This picture was painted in the third year of Longqing Ming Dynasty (1569), when Wen was 68 years old. The picture depicts the scenery seen from Xukou's boating in Taihu Lake. The composition adopts the "Ping Yuan" method in the "Three Far Ways" of ancient Chinese painting. Chinese painters pursue to convey the spirit of mountains and rivers and express their minds directly. Even when they take the actual mountains and rivers as the topic, they do not stick to the mechanical description of vision. In this painting, the composition of "Ping Yuan" is real and natural, focusing on the vast water surface, which is different from the overlapping and compact layout commonly used by Wen, highlighting the vastness of Taihu Lake. This way of composition highlights the theme perfectly and shows a clear and remote artistic conception. Light and elegant colors are typical features of literary painting.
